During the initial journey of studying at BINUS University, new students are welcomed not only with a regular orientation but also with an extensive program called the First Year Program (FYP). To ensure this program runs smoothly, there is a vital figure who plays a significant role: the First Year Program Leader (FYPL). So, what exactly is an FYPL? Let’s discuss!

What is an FYP Leader?

A First Year Program Leader (FYPL) is an active student selected to be actively involved throughout the First Year Program (FYP) activities. The FYPL acts as the coordinator for the Freshmen Leaders (FLs) and Freshmen Partners (FPs) within the FYP. The FLs and FPs directly mentor first-year students (Freshmen). In addition to serving as a coordinator, the FYPL also functions as a liaison between various parties, such as the study program, the Student Association within the study program, and relevant centers involved in the FYP program.

Roles and Duties of an FYP Leader

The FYPL serves as the coordinator for FLs and FPs while also acting as a role model for team members and Freshmen. Below are the duties of an FYPL:

  1. Fulfilling the Target Needs for FLs and FPs
The FYPL is responsible for the recruitment process of FLs and FPs in their respective study programs. FYPLs are required to create strategies to meet the determined targets and be actively involved throughout the recruitment process.

  2. Coordinating and Being Responsible for Team Members
In the coordination process, the FYPL opens effective communication channels with team members. Throughout the program, the FYPL is present to help team members resolve any problems or challenges they face.

  3. Supporting the Implementation of FYP
The FYPL plays an active role in providing and offering alternative solutions to problems, coordinating with the study program and relevant centers according to the needs or issues encountered. The FYPL also reports every development and evaluation to the supervising staff.

  4. Monitoring Reports from FLs and FPs
To support the smooth running of the program, the FYPL fulfills their function in monitoring team members’ reports, such as attendance data and other supporting documents.

Requirements to Become an FYP Leader

Not all students can become an FYPL, as this position requires significant responsibility. The main requirements include:

  • Active student at BINUS UNIVERSITY

  • Minimum GPA of 2.75

  • Having completed a certain number of credits (SKS)

  • Having successfully completed their own FYP

  • Not having committed any violations of the Code of Conduct for Student Activities (Peraturan Tata Tertib Aktivitas Kemahasiswaan [PTTAK])

  • Willing to undergo the administrative selection and interview process

FYP Leader Registration and Selection Process

Registration for prospective FYPLs usually takes place around January each year. The FYPL selection stages are conducted strictly to identify the most capable leaders.

The registration process is conducted through BINUSMAYA and consists of several main selection phases: administrative screening, interviews, and a Leaderless Group Discussion (LGD).
During the registration phase, participants complete a form and provide their personal information. In the interview phase, relevant staff members assess candidates’ motivation, communication skills, time management, critical and creative thinking, and collaboration abilities to evaluate their readiness for the FYPL role. Candidates who pass the interview stage proceed to the LGD stage. Those who successfully complete all stages are officially announced and will undergo a role briefing before beginning their duties as FYPLs.

Training Session for FYP Leaders

After passing the selection, FYPLs are required to attend a training session focusing on:

  • Effective communication skills

  • Self-management

  • Leadership

  • Effective monitoring skills

  • Problem-solving skills

  • Facilitating skills

An example of a training session is “Becoming the Captain of Leadership Journey,” which is held for all selected FYPLs.
