Applying for a program or study program change is a process for students who are already enrolled in a program or study program at BINUS University but wish to transfer to another program or study program within the university. The key differences between a program change and a study program change are as follows:

Program Change:

A program change occurs when a student applies to transfer to a different program within the same school. For example, a student from the Cyber Security program applies to transfer to the Game Application and Technology program, both of which are part of the School of Computer Science. If the application is approved, the student continues their studies without receiving a new student identification number (NIM). This is because many foundational courses within the same school/faculty overlap, meaning the student does not need to restart courses that have already been completed.

Study Program Change:

A study program change involves transferring to a different major that belongs to a different school or faculty. For instance, a student from the Marketing Communication study program applies to transfer to the Psychology study program. Marketing Communication is under the Faculty of Digital Communication and Hotel Management & Tourism, while Psychology is part of the Faculty of Humanities. If the application is approved, the student must restart their studies from the first semester and will receive a new student identification number (NIM).

When Can Students Apply for a Program or Study Program Change?

Students may apply for a program or study program change between the 2nd and 5th semesters of their current studies. Considering the process involves several steps, applications must be submitted at least one month before the semester begins. For example, if the Spring 2024/2025 semester starts on February 3, 2025, the deadline to submit an application is January 3, 2025. Students are allowed to apply only once. If a transfer is approved, the student cannot apply for another program or study program change.

Why Can’t First-Semester Students Apply for a Program or Study Program Change?

First-semester students are still adjusting to university life after graduating from high school. They also need time to explore their current study program to determine whether it aligns with their interests, talents, and career plans. This helps prevent premature decisions. Students are encouraged to understand the curriculum of their current program before considering a transfer.

Who Can Students Consult About Their Plan to Change Programs or Study Programs?

Students can gather information about programs or study programs at BINUS by visiting curriculum.binus.ac.id. This site provides details about career prospects for each program, helping students assess whether a program aligns with their aspirations. Additionally, students can consult with their parents/guardians, Academic Advisory lecturers, department heads, Freshmen Partners, or counselors from Student Advisory in their respective campus areas.

Where Can Students Process Their Study Program Change Application?

Once students have gathered adequate information about their desired program, they can start the application process through the Student Advisory counselors. The counselors will discuss the student’s interests and reasons for applying before outlining the steps for submitting a program or study program change application. Information about Student Advisory locations can be accessed at https://linktr.ee/studentadvisorybinus.

Key Considerations Before Deciding to Change Programs or Study Programs:

  1. Discomfort with the Current Study Program:

    • If discomfort lasts less than a semester, give yourself time to adapt and seek support from peers, lecturers, or counselors.

    • If discomfort persists for more than one semester, discuss your decision with others (e.g., parents, friends, lecturers, counselors) to gain new perspectives.

  2. Identifying the Source of Discomfort:

    • If the issue stems from personal problems, address those with a counselor or professional (psychologist/psychiatrist).

    • If the difficulty lies in understanding course material, evaluate whether another study program better aligns with your interests and career goals.

  3. Exploring Other Options:

    • Research the curriculum and career prospects of the desired program to ensure it fits your goals. Consult with counselors for further guidance.

How Does the Application Process Work with Counselors?

  1. Financial Check:
Counselors confirm with the Financial Services Office if there are outstanding payments. Any pending dues must be cleared before proceeding.

  2. Application Documents:
    Students may need to submit:

    • Essay: Describe your current academic situation, challenges faced, reasons for changing programs, and your commitment to succeeding in the new program.

    • Application Letter: Addressed to the Head of the originating program, including details of the current and desired program, campus location, and your contact information for follow-up.

  3. Counselor Review:
Essays and application letters are reviewed by counselors, who provide feedback if revisions are needed.

  4. Approval Process:
The application is submitted to the Head of the originating program for approval. Once approved, it is forwarded to BINUS Support for further processing.

  5. Notification:
Students will receive email updates from BINUS Support regarding the status of their application.

The entire process typically takes 1-2 months. For more details, visit https://support.binus.ac.id/716-141397.
