Repeating a course is a situation that some students may encounter during their academic journey. This usually happens when a student does not meet the minimum required grade for a particular course. In this article, we will explain what a repeated course is, why it must be retaken, how to check your status, and when you can retake the course to ensure successful completion.
What Is a Repeated Course?
A repeated course is a course that has been taken before but did not meet the minimum grade requirement, resulting in a Failed status. The grading system at BINUS uses letter grades, each representing a range of scores with corresponding grade points.
Students typically need to retake a course if they receive grades D, E, or F, or if their grade is lower than the minimum grade set for that course. For example:
-
Algorithm and Programming requires a minimum grade of C. If a student receives a D, the status will be Failed and the course must be repeated.
-
Basic Statistics requires a minimum grade of D. If a student earns a C, the status will be Passed and the course does not need to be retaken.
For a detailed explanation of BINUS grading system, refer to this article:
Grading System Explanation
Why Do Failed Courses Need to Be Repeated?
Failed courses must be repeated because students are expected to demonstrate the required competencies according to the curriculum standards. Course grades also affect:
-
Cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA)
-
Total completed credits (SKS)
For instance, in regular programs, students must complete at least 146 credits as per the curriculum to be declared eligible for graduation. Furthermore, mandatory courses must be passed with at least the minimum grade set by the program.
How to Check the Status of Your Courses
Students can check the status of their courses via BINUSMAYA by following these steps:
-
Open BINUSMAYA in your browser.
-
Navigate to Academic Services → Learning → Curriculum → Course Distribution.
The Course Distribution page will display:
-
List of courses by semester
-
Number of credits per course
-
Minimum grade requirement
-
Grade obtained by the student
-
Status (Passed or Failed)
If any courses show Failed, they must be repeated.

When Can Failed Courses Be Repeated?
There are several options for retaking failed courses:
1. Compact Semester
-
Conducted in July–August (between even and odd semesters).
-
Duration is approximately 1.5 months.
-
Maximum of 3 courses or 9 credits.
-
Only courses previously taken and marked as Failed can be registered.
-
New courses cannot be added.

2. Regular Semester with Package Courses
Repeated courses can be added to the regular semester package as long as the total credits do not exceed 22 credits.
3. Regular Semester with Enrichment Program
-
Enrichment Program carries 20 credits, so you can only add up to 4 credits for repeated courses.
-
The repeated course must not include lab credits because the classes will be conducted online.
4. Regular Semester with Thesis
-
Thesis is worth 6 credits.
-
Additional repeated courses usually range from 4 to 16 credits.
-
Some programs have specific rules; for example, those under the School of Computer Science may allow a maximum of 12 extra credits along with the thesis.
These requirements should be confirmed with Student Advisory to ensure proper study planning.
Who Can You Consult for Advice?
Students can consult with:
-
Academic Advisor
-
Deputy Head of Program (DHOP)
-
Student Advisory counselors at the respective campus
